Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Celebrating Hispanic Truckers’ Contributions

A Hispanic truck driver in a reflective safety vest and plaid shirt smiles with pride while standing beside a red semi-truck on an open highway at sunset, holding a logbook in his hand. The golden light reflects off the truck, creating a warm and optimistic editorial-style scene.

Every September, Hispanic Heritage Month offers us the chance to pause, reflect, and celebrate the incredible contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the United States. For those of us in trucking, this celebration carries special weight. Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. truck drivers is Hispanic, and their work is not only vital to the industry but also to the economy and daily life of millions of Americans.

As the CEO of Rig on Wheels and the host of The Rig on Wheels Show, I’ve had the privilege of working directly with drivers from all backgrounds, and I can say without hesitation: Hispanic truckers are the backbone of the supply chain.

In this blog, I want to highlight their stories, their resilience, and the role they play in shaping the future of trucking. Along the way, I’ll also share resources that can help fleets recruit and retain diverse drivers because honoring contributions is important, but building a more inclusive future is essential.

The Growing Impact of Hispanic Truckers

The numbers speak volumes. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and industry reports, nearly 20% of professional truck drivers identify as Hispanic or Latino. This percentage has steadily increased over the past two decades. This growth reflects larger demographic shifts in the U.S. labor force and underscores trucking’s role as a gateway to economic opportunity.

For many Hispanic families, trucking has been a pathway to stability, homeownership, and entrepreneurship. We see this not just in company drivers but also in the rising number of Hispanic-owned trucking businesses and fleets. Their presence has strengthened communities, provided employment opportunities, and ensured the continued movement of freight across industries, from agriculture to manufacturing to retail.

A Legacy of Hard Work and Sacrifice

Hispanic truckers bring more than just numbers to the table. They bring a legacy of resilience and sacrifice.

  • Family-first values: Many Hispanic drivers see trucking not just as a job but as a way to support their families back home, whether in Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Querétaro.

  • Cross-border expertise: Hispanic drivers often navigate bilingual, cross-cultural lanes with skill, especially in regions like Texas and California, where freight frequently flows between the U.S. and Mexico.

  • Community pride: For many, driving is tied to a larger sense of contributing to both the American economy and their cultural heritage.

These drivers remind us that trucking is not just about moving goods; it’s about moving dreams forward. Hispanic truckers are not just part of trucking’s past; they are shaping its future.

Challenges on the Road

Despite their contributions, Hispanic drivers still face barriers that deserve attention.

  1. Language and Regulation Many Hispanic drivers are bilingual or Spanish-dominant. Recent enforcement of English-only regulations at weigh stations has raised concerns about fairness and opportunity. While safety is paramount, fleets need to balance compliance with training and support programs that help drivers succeed.

  2. Retention and Career Growth Hispanic drivers sometimes face limited pathways for advancement due to cultural barriers or a lack of mentorship. Retention isn’t just about pay; it’s about building inclusive workplaces where diverse drivers feel valued.

  3. Health and Wellness Like all drivers, Hispanic truckers face the physical and mental demands of the road. However, cultural stigmas surrounding healthcare access and language barriers can make it more challenging for them to obtain the support they require.

Recruiting and Retaining Hispanic Drivers: What Works

As someone who’s been in truck driver recruiting for more than 15 years, I can tell you: inclusion is not just the right thing to do; it’s good business. Fleets that understand this are already seeing the results in stronger retention and lower turnover.

Here are a few proven strategies:

  • Clear, Driver-Centered Job Ads: Many fleets lose Hispanic drivers because their ads sound corporate or vague. Our Driver Magnet Kit™ includes plug-and-play captions and job posts written in plain, relatable English, the kind of language drivers actually respond to. For fleets struggling to connect with diverse drivers, including Hispanic drivers, it’s not about translation. It’s about writing job ads that feel clear, respectful, and human. Get the Driver Magnet Kit™ here.

  • Cultural Competence in Onboarding: Pair new Hispanic drivers with peer mentors who can guide them through orientation and company culture.

  • Flexible Communication Tools: Use WhatsApp groups, translated safety manuals, and bilingual dispatchers to make sure drivers are never left out of the loop.

  • Celebrating Heritage: Recognize Hispanic Heritage Month internally. Small gestures like spotlighting Hispanic drivers in newsletters or social media go a long way in making drivers feel valued.

Faces of the Road®️: Real Stories, Real Impact

At Rig on Wheels, we launched Faces of the Road®️ to highlight the diversity of America’s truck drivers. The digital calendar features portraits, quotes, and stories from drivers across the country, many of whom are Hispanic.

Their words bring to life the realities behind the wheel: long hours, sacrifice, but also pride, purpose, and community. You can download your copy of the Faces of the Road®️ 2025 Calendar here.

By elevating these stories, we’re not just honoring Hispanic Heritage Month. We’re building bridges of understanding across the industry.

Lessons from

Competing with Giants

In my book, Competing with Giants, I talk about how smaller companies and often underrepresented groups can stand toe-to-toe with industry giants by leaning on innovation, relationships, and resilience.

Hispanic truckers embody this spirit. Many start small, with one truck, building businesses that eventually rival large fleets. Their stories echo the central message of my book: you don’t need to be the biggest; you just need to be resourceful, strategic, and relentless.

Why Hispanic Heritage Month Matters for Trucking

Some may ask: Why does celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in trucking matter?

It matters because:

  • Representation drives recruitment. When young Hispanic men and women see drivers who look like them, they see trucking as a viable career path.

  • Cultural competence improves safety and retention. Fleets that adapt to bilingual and multicultural realities are more effective at reducing miscommunication-related incidents.

  • Inclusion is a business advantage. Diverse fleets are more adaptable, innovative, and appealing to shippers and partners.

This month isn’t about checking a box. It’s about recognizing that our industry’s strength lies in its diversity.

Why This Month Matters Beyond September

Hispanic truckers have been and will continue to be an essential force in trucking. From keeping store shelves stocked to shaping the future of fleet ownership, their contributions deserve recognition every day, not just during Hispanic Heritage Month.

This month is a reminder, but the work continues: fleets must continue building recruiting pipelines that reflect the richness of America, creating cultures where every driver—Hispanic, Black, White, male, female, veteran, or immigrant feels valued.

Because at the end of the day, trucking isn’t just about freight. It’s about people. And when people are respected and represented, our industry becomes stronger, safer, and built to last.

💡 At Rig on Wheels, we’re proud to celebrate the contributions of Hispanic truck drivers while helping fleets build stronger recruiting and retention strategies every day. Let’s keep driving the industry forward, together.
